Printing and PDF
A game, a study, a repertoire, an opponent’s scouting report or a booklet of games, on paper or in a PDF, laid out as in a book.
Terza Torre prints what you have on the screen as a chess book would set it: the moves with the variations indented, the comments, the symbols and the diagrams. The same sheet can be saved as a PDF. Printing and PDF belong to Pro; exporting to PGN stays free.
What is printed, and from where
- A game or a study: in the editor the button with the printer, beside Save, or File › Print… (⌘P). It is printed as it is on the screen, even with changes not yet saved. From the main window, with a single game or a single study selected, the same menu, or Print… with the right click.
- A booklet of games: with several games selected, Print… with the right click or File › Print…; or a whole list of the sidebar (All games, My games, Favourites, Last import, a collection), with right click → Print…, beside Export…. A list is printed whole, in the order it shows it, even if there is a search on it. At the head of the booklet is the index, with the page where each game starts. A booklet holds up to 1,000 games.
- A repertoire: with a right click on White repertoire or Black repertoire in the sidebar, or File › Print… on its page. See The repertoire.
- An opponent’s scouting report: Print… beside Done, in the report. See Opponents.
A booklet is prepared in the background, under Background work at the bottom of the sidebar (“Reading the games…”, “Setting the booklet…”), and Stop interrupts it; meanwhile the window stays free.
The print panel
It is the macOS one, with the preview of each page, the printer, the copies and the PDF menu to save. Below its options is the Terza Torre section, and the preview follows every choice:
| Board | Like a book: hatched dark squares, the classic pieces and a double frame, which reads well in black and white too. My board: the colours and pieces chosen in Settings. |
| Diagrams | None, At the key moments or Key moments and every ten moves; and The final position. A key moment is a move marked !!, !, ?? or ?, or one on which you drew arrows or circles. The starting position of a study, or of a game from a set-up position, is always there. In variations there are no diagrams. |
| Columns | One, or Two as in books. |
| Include | Comments, Variations, The engine’s analysis. |
| Games | For a booklet only: Each game on a new page, or one after the other. |
The panel shows only the options that change what you print: for a repertoire the board, Diagrams: At each branch and the columns; for the scouting report only the board. The choices stay for the next printing.
Page Setup… (⇧⌘P) chooses the paper, as in every Mac app.
On paper
At the head, the players with title and Elo and the result; then tournament, site, date and round, the opening and who annotated the game. For a study, the title and the notes. Then the moves: the main line in bold, each variation on a line of its own, indented, and variations within variations in brackets; the comments and symbols as you wrote them, in the notation you chose in Settings › Appearance.
With The engine’s analysis on, a game analysed with automatic analysis has below the head each player’s accuracy, the evaluation graph, the line on how the game was decided, and engine, depth and date. In the moves, the engine’s marks, notes and lines are in grey, to tell them apart from yours; the moves the engine marks !!, !, ?? or ? are also key moments for the diagrams.
At the bottom of each page, the page number and the game on it.
Saving a PDF
File › Export as PDF… asks where to save the file and writes it with the panel’s latest choices, without opening it. To choose first, use Print… and the panel’s PDF menu. The file takes the name of what it contains: “White – Black” for a game, the title for a study, the list’s name for a booklet.
