Documentation · The archive
The main window
The sidebar, the list of games and the game beside it: where you choose what to look at, and what you do with many games at once.
Three columns: on the left the sidebar, which chooses which games to look at; in the middle the list; on the right the selected game. Searching and sorting always work inside the list chosen in the sidebar.
While the archive is still empty, the right shows the welcome, with the four steps to get started: see Getting Started.
The sidebar
Library
- All games: the whole archive.
- My games: the ones you play in, recognised by your profile: first and last name, the FIDE ID and the aliases, that is the names you play under online or find written in PGN files. When a game of yours is not recognised, add that name to the profile’s aliases.
- Favourites: the games with the star.
- Last import: the games the last import added. Those already in the archive are not there. The next import replaces it, and a paste is an import too.
- Studies: your studies in place of the list (see Studies).
My games and Last import work themselves out: games are not put in or taken out by hand.
Collections: your collections and smart collections, with the rows for creating new ones. See Collections and smart collections.
Preparation: White repertoire, Black repertoire and Opponents open a page in place of the list and the game. See The repertoire and Opponents. While the page is open there is no toolbar, and in the menus search, sorting, statistics and import are off.
Repertoire, Opponents and smart collections are part of Terza Torre Pro. In the free version their rows carry the PRO mark: a click leaves the list as it was and opens the Terza Torre Pro window.
The sidebar’s lists also open from the View menu, in their order, from ⌘1 (All games) to ⌘8 (Opponents).
At the bottom is your name: a click opens Settings on the Profile tab. If the profile is still empty, it says Set up profile instead.
Help. Help › Terza Torre Help (⌘?) opens the page of this documentation about what you are looking at: the list, a collection, the statistics, the studies, the repertoire or the opponents.
The toolbar
From left to right, while the list is showing:
- Show statistics: the statistics of the list as it is at that moment, with its search. The same button takes you back to the games (⌘L).
- Search games: opens the search window. While a search is active the button is filled, and a click removes it. On a smart collection it opens its criteria.
- Sort games: date added, date of the game (newest or oldest first), White or Black player (A–Z), ECO code. The same list is in View › Sort by, and each list remembers its own order.
- Import games: the Import games window.
- +: New game opens the editor on a new game; New study opens a new study.
- At the far right, next to the search field, Appearance: light, dark or as the system.
The list
Each row gives the players and the result, then tournament, date and ECO code. The result is coloured by how it went for you: won, lost or drawn. It is grey in games you did not play, or while the profile is not set up yet. Two small icons mark the games played online and those with an engine analysis. The star shows on favourites, and on the others it appears under the pointer: a click adds or removes it.
Quick search: the field at the top right, ⌘F. Every word you type must be the start of a word, in any of these fields: players, tournament, site, opening, teams. The order does not matter: “magnus carlsen” and “carlsen magnus” find Carlsen, Magnus, “naj” finds the Najdorf, and “arlsen”, a piece from the middle, finds nothing. A nickname is one single word: “rossi” finds rossi-mario, “mario” does not. Every case is in Player names. The ECO code is also found in part (“b9” finds B90 to B99), a player’s FIDE ID only whole (“1503014” finds Carlsen, a piece of the number finds nothing). It does not search the date, the round or the comments. Capitals, accents and punctuation do not matter: “oberg” finds Öberg, “sao” finds São Paulo. To search by Elo, dates, result or position there is the search window (⌥⌘F).
The selected game
At the top, the header: the two players on two lines, each with the dot of their colour, title, name, federation, Elo and team, and between them the result. Below, the boxes Tournament, Site, Date, Round, Board, Rate of play, Opening and Moves. An online game says so in the Site: “Online”, and the website when it is known. The boxes are always there, with “—” if the game lacks that detail, and a value that is too long ends with “…” and can be read whole under the pointer.
Below are the board and the moves, with variations and comments. ← and → step through the moves, ↑ and ↓ go to the game before or after in the list. Here the game is only looked at: it is changed in the editor, which opens with a double click or with ⌘O.
Under the board, the move bar: first move, previous move, next move, last move, Flip board, then two menus.
- The magnifying glass searches the archive for the position on the screen (Search this position) or makes it the start of a study (New study from here).
- Share (the square with the arrow): Copy image, Copy FEN, Copy PGN, Save image… and Share image…, which opens macOS sharing (Messages, Mail, AirDrop…). What you see is what is shared: the image is the diagram with the board of your Settings, from the side you are looking from, with the move’s arrows and circles, on a white background; the FEN is the position’s full one; the PGN is the whole game, as Export… writes it. The same items are in File › Share the board, for the board of the window in front.
The same moves and the magnifying glass are also in the Board menu (⌘← and ⌘→ go to the start and the end, ⌘R flips). The keys without ⌘, and ⌘← ⌘→, work when the board has the keyboard, not while you type in a field.
Many games at once
You select them as in the Finder: ⇧-click, ⌘-click, ⌘A. A right click on a selected game acts on the whole selection; on a game outside the selection, only on that one. The same actions are in the Game, File and Edit menus.
| Keys | |
|---|---|
| Add to favourites, or remove if they are all there already | . (full stop) |
| Open game (one only) | ⌘O |
| Edit game data… | ⌘I |
| Copy | ⌘C |
| Paste | ⌘V |
| Export… | ⇧⌘E |
| Print… | ⌘P |
| Delete from archive | ⌘⌫ |
The ⌫ key depends on where you are. In a collection it takes the games out of that collection, without asking. Anywhere else, Favourites included, it deletes them from the archive, after you confirm. To remove only the star, there is the full stop.
The keys without ⌘ work for the list when it has the keyboard: in the search field they type, in the sidebar they act on the collections.
The right click also has:
- Collections: add, remove or move the games among the collections.
- Mark as online and Mark as over the board: the import works this out for each game, and if it gets it wrong you correct it here. On a single game a notice that closes by itself confirms it: “Marked as online.”
- Automatic analysis…: the engine analyses the selected games, one after the other (Automatic analysis, Pro).
- Prepare against: opens the dossier of that game’s opponent, or creates it (Opponents, Pro). If the profile does not say which colour you played, you choose the player, White or Black.
- Print…: one game, or a booklet of the selected games (Printing and PDF, Pro).
Dragging. Selected games can be dragged onto Favourites, which gives them the star, or onto a collection. The drag starts by moving the pointer sideways: up and down select rows. Dragged out of the app, into the Finder, onto the Desktop or into an email, they become a PGN file, with the name Export… would give: “White - Black.pgn” for one game, “Games.pgn” for more. A notice at the top says how many; for many games the progress is under Background work, at the bottom of the sidebar, with Stop.
A PGN file from the Finder dragged onto the window is imported at once, like a paste: see Importing games.
Copy and paste. ⌘C puts the PGN of the selected games on the clipboard, up to 100: for more there is Export…. ⌘V imports the PGN on the clipboard, up to 100 games: in a collection it also puts them in that collection, including those already in the archive; in Favourites it gives them the star.
Undo. ⌘Z undoes the star, adding to a collection, removing, moving, and online or over the board, and puts back only what the operation had changed. Deleting, changing a game’s data and a collection’s name cannot be undone. A deletion also clears the undos before it.
Exporting
Export… writes the selected games to a PGN file, in the order of the list. A single game is confirmed by a notice that closes by itself. A whole list is exported with a right click on its row in the sidebar → Export…: all its games, without the current search, and for a smart collection those its criteria find now. Comments, variations and symbols stay as they are.
Deleting
The question before deleting says how many games will go, and ends with a piece of advice: “Backing up the archive before proceeding is recommended.” The backup is made from Archive health. Once you confirm, the games leave the list at once, and the deletion goes on in the background: under Background work, at the bottom of the sidebar, there is Stop, and whatever has already been deleted stays deleted.
Delete all games (right click on All games, or the File menu) asks you to type the number of games, in digits and without the thousands separator: for 12,345 games you type 12345. The collections stay, empty.
Long jobs
Imports, large exports, deletions, automatic analysis, the search for duplicates, editing many games, printing a booklet: they appear at the bottom of the sidebar, under Background work, with their progress and, when possible, Stop. Meanwhile the window can be used. At the end a report stays on the screen until you press OK.
